Regulation
Milk snakes are cold blooded snakes. This means that when still they have a cold temperature, which makes their metabolism and heart rate slow down. They rely on outside heat sources to bring their body temperature up, which then makes their metabolism faster. This process is good for Milk snakes because during the winter they go into something similar to hibernation called brumation from October to April. They stay mostly in barns and since they do not have a heat source their metabolism will slow down, making it easier to be able to survive for long periods of time when only consuming a small meal.
Another way Milk snakes bring their body temperatures up is by moving. The more a Milk snake moves around the more energy it is burning and their body temperatures will rise. When they are still, their bodies begin the lower its temperature back down to its normal rate.
